When the woman and the youngster re-entered the cottage, he’d immediately recognized the mother. He could guess what was happening outside. Although he’d prepared for it, he hadn’t imagined it would play out in this way. In this place. And with these people involved. What was their connection with it all? He’d keep close, it was unlikely to end well. After losing her child in that way, didn’t she deserve to have someone like him looking out for her? And where did the kid come from? That might cause a problem later, but first things first.

The sirens were sounding. The first release must have begun. She was running to the bunker, the same as everybody else. That’s where he needed to be too. He followed at a distance, an expert at not being seen, but was quick to realize they weren’t going to make it in time.

The woman and child had reached the closed doors. She’d clearly decided the only sensible course of action would be to wait where they were. She was making good decisions under stress. He knew that when the first release was completed they wouldn’t be able to see a thing.

Sooner or later they’d be spotted and they’d be able to get in. He’d pretend to be bunker staff, nobody would know, and once inside he could patch in clearance levels. Should be simple enough.

As the woman and the child huddled together on the left-hand side of the bunker doors, they were unaware that only a few feet away was the man who would be forced to shoot one of them in the next thirty-six hours.
